He did his schooling from Don Bosco School, situated in Dibrugarh. Then he moved to Delhi for his further studies. He did his graduation in History honours from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and then received his law degree from Delhi University.

Career
Ranjan Gogoi was enrolled at the bar in the year 1978 and started practicing law at Gauhati High Court. There, he worked for almost 23 years, and then, he became a permanent judge on 28th February 2001. He worked there for almost 9 years and after that on 9th September 2010, he was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He was promoted to Chief Justice on 12th January 2011. His hard work and dedication paid him well and he became the Judge of the Supreme Court on 23rd April 2012.
On 3rd October 2018, he succeeded Justice Deepak Mishra to be appointed as the Chief Justice of India.

During his tenure as Chief Justice of India, Justice Tarun Gogoi delivered many significant judgments and orders. re-assessment of Mr. Amitabh Bachchan’s income was one of those judgments.
But “The Ayodhya Dispute” was the last and the biggest landmark judgment delivered by him in his entire career as CJI. On 9th November 2019, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, along with a team of 4 other supreme court judges, delivered the verdict regarding the Babri Masjid-Ram Janambhoomi Ayodhya case.
He retired from the post of Chief Justice of India on 17th November 2019.
But, this was not the end of his career.
On 16th March 2020, He was nominated as the Member of Rajya Sabha by Honorable President of India Ramnath Kovind. He took oath as a Rajya Sabha Member on 19th March 2020.
